What is the difference between a formal and informal meditation practice

I would say, the difference between a formal meditation practice and an informal meditation practice is one is done at a set time and one is done throughout the day. When you are doing a formal meditation practice you intentionally set aside a particular block of time that you are going to practice your meditation. When you do this, it allows you to train your mind more deeply. You can “get into” the meditation more with a formal meditation practice.

An informal meditation practice is something you do throughout your daily life/routine. For instance, practicing being mindful while doing dishes, brushing your teeth or driving your car is more of an informal type of practice. It allows you to continue to train your mind to be present in whatever activity you are doing. You can do it with any activity and at any time throughout the day. It is a process of “continuing” the meditation practice so it not only becomes something you do at a set time, but it becomes apart of who you are.

From my own personal perspective, I find that doing a formal meditation practice helps me to deepen in to the meditation. It allows me the ability to “let go” more and relax deeply into the meditation practice. The informal meditation practice supports my formal meditation practice. My formal meditation practice trains my mind more deeply to be able to focus on the more informal practice. Without having a formal practice, I would have found it more difficult to focus on being mindful while doing dishes or writing an article. Of course, it can be done. You can start with an informal practice and train yourself to be in the moment. I just feel it is more challenging to do it that way. Of course, remember, it is your journey so the choice is yours. I only speak from my experience. I prefer a formal AND an informal type of meditation. This is so I can continue to raise my vibration to heal my mind, body and spirit.
