Mindful Shower Meditation for Anxiety & Stress

Relieve Stress and Anxiety in the Shower

Mindful Shower MeditationDo you tend to bring your worries and stress to the shower with you? Are you thinking about conversations that happened in the past or have yet to happen? Are you checking off your to-do list while in the shower? If you answered yes, to any one of these questions or know that you are not fully present in the shower, then consider incorporating a mindful shower meditation into your routine.

Being entirely in your head as you shower exacerbates stress and anxiety. It causes it to go on overload. De-stress, relax and calm your mind with the art of being present with mindfulness.

When you are mindful, you experience the moment fully without judgment. Mindfulness is the art of paying attention to your outer and inner experiences with patience, acceptance and compassion. Consistent practice of mindfulness allows you to develop an inner calmness, stability and non-reactivity. This is a useful skill in handling situations that occur in life. As a result, you will be less stress and less anxious.

The following are simple steps you can take to be mindful in the shower:

  • Start from the moment you step into the shower. Be mindful of the temperature of the floor as your feet step into the shower.
  • Feel the temperature of the handle as you turn on the shower.
  • Notice how the pressure of the water on your body makes you feel.
  • Notice the smell of the soap. How does it make you feel?
  • Notice how the towel  feels on your hands.

If you notice yourself caught up in thoughts, relax and take a deep breath. Know that in the moment you noticed your thoughts, you have become mindful again. Now that is something to celebrate. Just easily return to being mindful of sensations as you shower.
