Can meditation be harmful is an interesting and somewhat complex question. First, it depends on your perspective. What do you deem as harmful? Let’s explore this question in depth and I will let you decide whether meditation is harmful.

Can Meditation be Harmful

Meditation is an inward journey that starts the process of you coming into alignment with your true self. It is a journey of cultivation of a better life and lifestyle. While meditation in itself is benign, there are facets of meditation that one should take into consideration. When you meditate, you let go and release a lot of old "stuff’ or “baggage” that has been stored away in your body. When this happens, you can release things that you are not able to handle on your own. For instance, if you suffer from depression, experienced a serious trauma or have irrational fears the process of meditation will start to reveal to you things that have been suppressed. This can happen gradually or it can happen at a pace that you are not able to handle on your own. These “old baggages” can trigger thoughts that you may not be able to handle and thus may entice you to resort back to your old coping mechanisms which may or may not have been supportive to healing. It is during these times that you may want to consider consulting with a specialist of your choice who will be able to help you deal with the emotional issues that arise.

To me meditation is not something to fear. To me, meditation is the path to freedom. A path that can be challenging at times but a path worth walking. Meditation allows you to come into alignment with your true spiritual self. Meditation helps you to become whole again. Meditation is a lifelong journey to healing and should be something that is taken on seriously. It is not a quick fix method. It is something that you use as a tool to help you find your way “home”. As you find your way home, you let go of “old baggage” that does not serve you and step into your true self. For some this journey is easier depending on the amount and intensity of the “old baggage” that was stored. Now does that make meditation harmful? I will let you be the judge.
